PAYE & Net Salary

Enter your gross monthly salary. We compute SHIF (2.75%), NSSF Tier I+II, Housing Levy (1.5%), and progressive PAYE — then return your net pay.

i NSSF, SHIF and Housing Levy are deducted first to arrive at taxable income. PAYE applies to what's left.

SHIF Calculator

The Social Health Insurance Fund replaced NHIF in October 2024. It's a flat 2.75% of gross salary with a KES 300 minimum — and no cap.

Enter your salary

NSSF (Tier I + II)

Effective Feb 2026, Tier I is 6% on the first KES 9,000 (max 540). Tier II is 6% on KES 9,001–108,000 (max 5,940). Employee max: KES 6,480. Employer matches.

Enter your salary

Affordable Housing Levy

1.5% of gross salary from the employee, matched by the employer. Since Dec 2024 the AHL relief was repealed — it no longer reduces your taxable income for PAYE.

Enter your salary

Excise Duty

Quick excise duty estimator for common categories. Rates come from the Excise Duty Act as amended by the Finance Act. For niche goods, confirm with KRA.

i Rates verified April 2026 against Finance Act 2025. Items taxed at specific (per-litre / per-stick) rates — beer, wine, spirits, cigarettes, fuel — are not shown here because they can't be computed from a single value alone. See the Tax Guide for those.
Pick a category

Import Duty

Kenya uses CIF (Cost + Insurance + Freight) as the customs value. We stack Import Duty → Excise → VAT → IDF → RDL in the correct KRA sequence.

i For vehicles, KRA compares CIF to the CRSP (depreciated by age) and uses the higher value. This tool uses your entered CIF directly.
Enter CIF value

VAT Calculator

Standard VAT in Kenya is 16%. Use this to either add VAT to a net amount, or extract VAT from a VAT-inclusive figure.

i Under eTIMS, input VAT can only be claimed with a valid electronic invoice bearing the buyer's PIN. Claims must be made within 6 months.

Fringe Benefit Tax

When an employer lends money to an employee below the market rate, a taxable benefit arises. FBT is payable by the employer at the corporate rate of 30%. The prescribed market rate for Jan–Jun 2026 is 8%.

i Monthly benefit = (Loan × rate difference) ÷ 12. FBT = Benefit × 30%. Payable by the 9th of the following month.

Net → Gross Salary

You know the take-home you want. We work backwards through PAYE, SHIF, NSSF, and Housing Levy to find the gross salary you need to negotiate.

i Because PAYE is progressive and deductions depend on gross, we solve by iteration. Result is accurate to within KES 1.
Enter your target net pay

Withholding Tax

WHT is deducted at source on payments like dividends, interest, royalties, consultancy fees, and rent. The payer remits to KRA and issues a withholding certificate.

i WHT must be remitted within 5 working days of deduction. For non-residents, a Double Taxation Treaty (DTT) may reduce the rate — check KRA before filing.

Monthly Rental Income Tax

Resident landlords earning residential rent between KES 288,000 and 15M per year pay a flat 7.5% on gross rent. No deductions or expenses claimed. Return due by the 20th of the following month.

i MRI only applies to resident landlords for residential property. Non-residents, commercial rent, and rent above KES 15M/year use regular income tax.
Enter your monthly rent

Turnover Tax (TOT)

Small businesses with annual turnover between KES 1M and 25M pay 1.5% on gross sales (reduced from 3% by Finance Act 2024). Filed monthly by the 20th. Simpler than regular income tax — no expenses to track.

i TOT does not apply to rental income, management/professional services, or businesses with turnover > KES 25M. Those use regular corporate tax.
Enter your turnover

Car Import Budget

You have a total budget for a landed car in Kenya. We work backwards through Import Duty, Excise, VAT, IDF, RDL, and typical clearing costs to tell you the CIF value you can afford to pay in Japan (or the UK).

i Planning tool only. KRA values cars at the higher of your invoice CIF or their CRSP lookup. Clearing costs (~160k) and exchange rates (~KES 129/USD, ~KES 0.82/JPY) vary — pad 5–10% on top. For final duty, use KRA's current CRSP list.

Common questions

Answers to the questions everyone asks.

How is PAYE calculated in Kenya in 2026?

Kenya uses a five-band progressive PAYE system: 10% on the first KES 24,000, 25% on the next 8,333, 30% on the next 467,667, 32.5% on the next 300,000, and 35% on anything above 800,000 per month.

Before applying the bands, your employer deducts NSSF, SHIF (2.75%), and any pension or mortgage interest contributions to arrive at your taxable income. The tax calculated is then reduced by the KES 2,400 monthly personal relief (plus insurance relief if applicable) to give the PAYE payable.

What's the NSSF contribution in February 2026?

From February 2026 (Year 4 of the NSSF Act 2013), contributions apply in two tiers: Tier I is 6% on the first KES 9,000 of pensionable pay (max KES 540), and Tier II is 6% on KES 9,001–108,000 (max KES 5,940).

The maximum monthly employee contribution is KES 6,480, and the employer matches this amount exactly. NSSF is a pre-tax deduction, so it reduces your taxable income for PAYE.

Is SHIF the same as NHIF?

No. SHIF (Social Health Insurance Fund) replaced NHIF on 1 October 2024. Unlike NHIF's banded contributions with a fixed maximum, SHIF is a flat 2.75% of gross salary with a KES 300 minimum and no upper cap.

SHIF is a pre-tax deduction, so it reduces your taxable income before PAYE is calculated.

Does the Housing Levy reduce my taxable income?

No — the AHL relief was repealed in December 2024. The 1.5% Affordable Housing Levy is still deducted from your take-home, but it no longer reduces your taxable income for PAYE purposes.

If you see an older payroll calculator deducting AHL before PAYE, it's out of date and will under-compute your tax.

How much is VAT in Kenya?

The standard VAT rate is 16%. Selected petroleum products are taxed at 8%, and zero-rated supplies (exports, basic foods) at 0%. Under eTIMS, you can only claim input VAT with a valid electronic invoice bearing your PIN, and claims must be made within 6 months.

When is PAYE due to KRA?

PAYE is due by the 9th day of the following month, along with NSSF, SHIF, the Housing Levy, and Fringe Benefit Tax. VAT and Turnover Tax returns are due by the 20th. Withholding Tax must be remitted within 5 working days of deduction.

Do Kadiria's calculators save my data?

No. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your salary, loan, CIF value, or any other figure you enter is never transmitted to our servers or stored anywhere. See our privacy policy for the full details.

How do I calculate the gross salary I need to take home a specific amount?

Use our Net → Gross calculator. Enter your target take-home pay and we work backwards through PAYE, SHIF, NSSF, and Housing Levy to find the gross salary your employer would need to offer you. Accurate to the shilling.
