The cost of missing a date

Penalties & interest

Kenyan tax penalties are cumulative: a late-filing penalty plus interest on the unpaid amount. The longer you wait, the more it compounds.

What happens if you file late

  • PAYE: 25% of the tax due, or KES 10,000 — whichever is higher.
  • VAT: KES 10,000, or 5% of the tax due — whichever is higher.
  • Turnover Tax: KES 1,000 per month of default.
  • Individual annual return: KES 2,000, or 5% of tax due — whichever is higher.
  • Company annual return: KES 20,000, or 5% of tax due — whichever is higher.
  • Interest: 1% per month (or part month) on any unpaid tax, running until settled.

Interest runs from the original due date, not the date you were assessed. This means filing late and not paying is always more expensive than filing a nil return or an estimate and adjusting later.
